Scott Towne popped his cross-country chopper cherry in the early ‘90s on a CB550 he and his father prepped for the journey. His destination was a close friend’s wedding in Cambria, CA. The nuptials were a star-studded affair, with Academy Award-nominated film directors, groundbreaking graphic designers and celebrated journalists in attendance. Then there was Scott—a gifted renaissance man in his own right—revving up that olive green Honda in a polyester suit.
I witnessed Scott’s arrival at that swank Central California soiree, and instantly decided this corn belt BMXer was a badass. Nearly two decades later, “badass” still describes the way this husband, father, businessman and inveterate two-wheeled disciple lives life fully pinned in America’s heartland.

Scott A. Towne
Age: 44
Hometown: Otsego MI

Spiritual home: Right up the street
Significant other(s): Wife and two small, kick-ass boys. Three dog night
Regular players in my riding crew: Lone Wolf mostly. A revolving crew of cyclists, otherwise, primarily pedal-powered

My job: Eastern Midwest sales rep for Sole Technology, which is the parent company of Etnies, Emerica and 'eS footwear, Altamont apparel and ThirtyTwo snowboard boots. I get to travel the Midwest and interact with mostly like-minded folks. Skateparks are a definite perk. They break up the highway time and keep me in motion. I am also the US Ad Sales Manager for DIG BMX magazine. I've never considered myself a "sales guy", but I can sell anything I believe in. The only jobs I've ever had have been in the bicycle and skateboard industries. Pretty stoked on that, especially considering how far removed I am, geographically, from said industries

My passions: I try to maximize every minute of every day. I spend as much time as possible with my boys and work consumes a large percentage of each day, of course, but I definitely milk every minute. I am obsessed with wheeled vehicles. My whole life has been BMX (and I'm still all about it), but motorcycles have almost always been in the picture. I got my first motorcycle for my tenth birthday. I love motocross, enduro, speedway and especially flat track. I am constantly building choppers in my mind. I think I have a good perception of the motorcycle aesthetic. I know what a good bike looks like. I also know what I don't like. I analyze every motorcycle I see and instantly decide what changes need to be made. Unfortunately, I lack the finances and skill set to follow through on these mind-plans, so I'm left to make do with the resources I have. I can't weld (yet) and my quiver of motorcycles is filled with smaller, Japanese machines. My little hardtail bike is a ridiculous Suzuki TS 185 2-stroke. TS = Totally Stupid. When my two XS 650 projects are done, they will be the largest-displacement motorcycles I've owned. With the exception of welding, I do all fabricating myself, including trying to upholster seats, prep tubing for welding, etc. Sometimes it works and sometimes it sucks, but I always learn something.

My dream weekend, assuming money and time were elastic:
With the family: I want our boys to experience everything. Maybe take them up in small plane, swimming in the ocean, a quick peak at the Grand Canyon (never been there myself), camping in the desert, four-wheeling in a big truck, cruising the highway in a Plymouth Roadrunner and lots of dirt bike action
With my friends: BMX trails, camp out, drink beer by a fire
With my motorcycle buddies: Ride lots of miles on curvy roads, camp out, drink beer by a fire

My relationship with some important people, in 75 words or less:
Dad: 500 words or more might not cover it, but I love him dearly and respect him. Our relationship is somewhat strained, but fairly solid. I don't see him nearly enough. More time together in person might improve things

My boss: I don't really have a "boss". I have several "managers" I answer to on some level, but each day is really up to me. It can go either way. If I don't work I don't make any money. A.B.H. Always Be Hustlin'
My worst customer: My worst customer was once my best customer. It might come back around
Last thoughts: Live Life Every Day

Scott is the reality, which makes him much cooler than the fantasy.
