Slab City Riot 2 at The Range in Niland, CA

Epic. That's the only way to describe the mayhem that was the 2010 Slab City Riot just outside of the dusty town of Niland, CA. Epic.
An estimated 1,500 bodies swarmed the post apocolyptic landscape, most of them on some sort of home-built death trap of a motorcycle.
The afternoon started off with many cases of free PBR in the Biltwell booth, which was next to the Lowbrow/Rubbertree free Whisky Bar which was situated near the free keg supplied by Beer Breed. Between the booze tents and the stage (called "The Range") was the fire pit and an extra pile of wood for later. Chase trucks from all over stopped on the way in and unloaded extra construction materials, pallets, doors and anything else that could burn.
Between the firepit and the port-o-Jon's was a mysteriously giant penis painted on the ground, attached to an even more giant scrotum. Just before dark, right on schedule, McGoo (Hal Wade on Chop Cult) started whipping the crowd into a small frenzy, insulting and cajoling riders to enter the Coctagon. The rules were simple and the prize was as big as the balls drawn in the dirt – $500 cash. No real punches, gotta wear a helmet, no thrusts with the bats, drop or lose your bat and you are out, get shoved outside the Coctagon and you are done. Otherwise, it was a free-for-all. About 15 riders entered and the strategic and somewhat shocked Kevin Moore, a scientist from Berkely no less emerged as the last man standing and was elated at the reward.
Not long after the Coctagon battle, the first of four bands took the stage. Shelby Cobra & The Mustangs (well, the Mustangs didn't make it) did a great outlaw country set, and worked his way through some technical difficulties our local host suffered with the sound equipment. Shelby stuck it out and showed true class the whole time and the problem eventually got sorted. Three more bands tore it up, In The Red from San Diego, Meatball's band Smiling Face Down and the Hate Fucker's own Bricktop out of Tucson burned it down with their brand of literally hard-hitting (as one drunk fan found out the hard way) thug rock. Once Bricktop cleared the stage, it was open mic night passing from locals to an extremely talented singer with hilariously focused lyrics and fast-paced cover songs to finally finishing with an endless loop of CCR that blasted until after the sun came up. In the morning the hustling food vendor couldn't make coffee fast enough as riders stood in line for hot Joe and chorizo.
This whole weird sheebang was put on by us, the guys who run Biltwell and Chop Cult with the help of 25 dedicated sponsors, and a motivated bunch of friends. We appreciate everyone who took the time to pitch in and help out or showed some class and rode out for a good time in the last free place in America. See ya' next year...

The afternoon started off with many cases of free PBR in the ChopCult booth, which was next to the Lowbrow/Rubbertree Whiskey Bar that was situated near the free keg supplied by Beer Breed. Between the booze tents and The Range (Builder Bill's makeshift rock stage) a fire pit raged from dusk till dawn. Chase trucks from all over stopped on the way in and unloaded extra construction materials, pallets, doors and anything else that could burn, and rioters stoked the fire.

Between the firepit and the Port-o-Jons was a giant penis painted on the ground, attached to an even larger scrotum. Just before dark, CC co-conspiritor Halwade started whipping the crowd into a small frenzy, insulting and cajoling riders to enter the Coctagon. The rules were simple and the prize was even bigger than the balls painted in the sand: $500 cash. No real punches, gotta wear a helmet, no thrusts with the bats, drop or lose your bat and you are out, get shoved outside the Coctagon and you are done. Otherwise, it was a free-for-all. Fifteen riders entered and the strategic and somewhat shocked scientist from Berkley, CA named Kevin Moore emerged victorious.  Next year's Coctagon bats will sell for 20 dollars!

I was waiting for Tina Turner and Mel Gibson to show up any minute. That was as close to MAD MAX in real life as it's ever going to get. CRAZY!

Bill, Magoo, and gang did a hell of a job as usual. Since the very first EDR these cats have stuck their necks out to make things happen. No BS just action, and I'm proud to have been a small part of it. Awesome!

Dr. Kevin "Cocktogon" Moore, yes, he has a fucking PHD! Killed it.

Thanks to all involved! Especially Bill and McGoo for starting what is now the premier motorcycle event on the calendar. I had a great time, met a lot of great folks, saw tons of great bikes, super carne asada burritos and hot dogs, and special thanks for those who provided the entertainment and free booze. That was my 71st birthday, what a birthday party.

Who thought that camping out for a night in a post-apocalyptic dump with 1499 drunks and a ton of toothless meth addicts would be such a good time?

Good times indeed.

I wish
