2011 Daytona Bike Week

Like millions of other Floridians I am the progeny of snowbirds, each side of my family hailing from vastly different cultures above the Mason-Dixon Line. For every son of displaced Yankees like me, however, there is a Florida cracker who looks at the secessionist roots of his rebel forefathers with pride. Throw a few million Cubans and Carribean expats into the mix and you can see why our twenty-seventh state is one of the most diverse melting pots in America. It should surprise no one why the first major motorcycle rally of 2011 attracts so many half-baked fruitcakes to Daytona's sun-kissed shores.

In his book "The Game: Penetrating the Secret Society of Pick-Up Artists," Neil Strauss describes the process of "peacocking" in exquisite detail. For anyone who's never donned an Affliction shirt, gladiator helmet or feather boa to pick up chicks, peacocking is just what the name implies. For ten days in Daytona Beach, motorcycle-mounted peacocks converge in full force. The style and intensity of their plumage varies widely, but the behavior is unmistakable.

A casual stroll down Florida's Atlantic coast highway reveals chopper cocks utilizing everything from neon lights, outlandish apehangers, tassled leather and fringe denim to bag their prey. Women of the species flock to this shit like crows to carrion, and the circle of life continues. When such garish displays fail to bear fruit, peacocks chum the rising tide with alcohol to catch the legal limit of sluts and whores. The whole crazy scene is enough to make a member of the Audubon Society turn in his binoculars. Almost. Painfully absurd though it might be, nearly 250,000 masochists keep coming back for more.

Two dedicated malcontents who are trying to put a new spin on this bird-brained scene are Taber Nash and Chris Callen. Several years ago this fabricator and magazine publisher launched the Limpnickie Lot to present chopperdom's greasy side to the masses. Men like Pat from LedSled Customs, Larry Pierce from Garage Company Customs, Tim and Jeff from Papa Clutch, Jeff Chochran and many others followed their lead, and a cultural shift was engaged. Bedazzled bikers who make up the bulk of the Bike Week crowd seem to be responding to the Lot in a positive way, and this fact alone makes the endeavor a success. Kudos, Chris and company for trying to shape the battlefield in a new way.

do you think that dude rides his "alligator bike" every day, or just for special occasions?

Some pretty wild shots there. Was that a Ruckus with the apehangers?

I live in Tampa Bay now; from Minnesota...
All I can say is, it is embarrassing to still see the 80's Post Motley Crue Lipstick Glam Rock, T-Backs & Chaps, Neon Zebra Print Spandex, Bourget Billeted to Oblivion, Regurgitated Masturbation Afterbirth that still chums up from the depths of a Dayton Bike Week Hangover from 20 years ago......
"My cock must be huge...after all, that's a 400 series tire behind my 350 cubic inch, 8 foot inverted forked 150k chopper I'm ridin'...."

Ya, besides the LL bikes, that Ruckus was probably the coolest thing there.
The guy with the croc-o-cycle got really lazy with that neon tube.. he could at least put some LED's behind the teeth or something..haha.
Looks like lots of peacocks doubling up trying to attract other peacocks.

You going to be hanging around Stone Edge tomorrow? If so I'll see you there.

"peacocks chum the rising tide with alcohol to catch the legal limit of sluts and whores."
Magoo, You have excellent word-smithing skills. I wish I had half of that creative descriptive and to the point ability when I talk or write! I laugh at every sentence.
Excellent take on the freakshow in the sun. Tim

It looks the same as the last time I went, which was 1995.

A place like that at least gives us a excuse to drink. And in most cases keeps the "man" off our backs. I am sure that there is plenty of sweet bikes to drool over besides just looking at the tail.

kudos to the limpnickie lot for trying to turn the tide, you've more stern stuff in the belly than i (not to mention a stable of beautiful scoots that are actually built to ride!). keep fightin the good fight, i'm behind you...way behind. last time i bartended in sturgis i lost my mind! a day or two i can take at rallies like daytona or sturgis, but anything more than that and i become a danger to myself and those around me.

The front image is awesome, Pavo cristatus; most people don't know that only the male is a peacock, the female is a peahen. The species is referred to as peafowl. Do I seem like I'm avoiding the whole bike thing? What's that, hey, look over there, another bird!

Those Rice Rockets with the Fat Tires look even dumber than an OCC Web Themed bike.

However, two decent looking chics on a Burner are A-OK in my book.

I know they bring in money to the locals, but I rather spend my time with real bikers at events like Born Free, with guys & gals that buiid their own bikes, not just buy a bunch of bolt-on chrome.

Daytona will always have its share of bikers that don't quite get it. Or do they? Freedom of expression is our right as Americans, not that I always agree with what people consider "cool", but hey, as long as ya ride it, don't knock mine, I'll respect yours. Some great photos in this post. Funky, funny, faggy or forgettable, they are afterall, all motorcycles. I don't have to ride yours. Thank God !
One of my favorite parts of Daytona is going down to Main Street and watchin all the crazy shit people ride. Thanks for giving me a view of the latest spectacle. I wanna see more or the FUNK MASTER !

Does the alligator shit come off? I can messing you scoot up for a few days a year, but riding around with that all the time? I'm sure it seemed like a cool idea when he thought of it. Maybe he's the official Florida gators mascoot....

Commented on 3-12-2011 At 02:38 pm

Be careful what you wish for, when there's to much of it the fun is gone!

Thank god for the Limpnickie Lot is all I have to say... All of that other shit makes me ill. I lived down there during two of these and that's two years I'll never get back. It makes me nauseous to even think about it.
